Good Evening Bitches!

One weekend about a month ago, I got it into my head that I wanted to buy a night cream and I went into every pharmacy in town checking out the best prices and so on and I came across this little or big gem,

Cyclax Oil of Evening Primrose Night Cream

Even the name sounds dreamy, It came in this nice big Jar with a yellow lid and it only cost me 1.50! I saw it in another pharmacy for 3.00 so it was a real steal and I had to have it.

It has a beautiful flowery scent and a nice creamy texture and I really do think it keeps my face feeling smooth and moisturized. I have been using it for the last month and the jar is still almost full!

As its a relatively low cost skin care product, you might expect it to have some strange ingredients in it. So I decided to do some research and see if that is really the case.

Here are the ingredients

Aqua= Water

Glyceryl Stearate
Glyceryl stearate is derived from palm kernel (The Palm kernel is the edible fruit of the oil palm tree) vegetable or soy oil (Soybean oil is a vegetable oil extracted from the seeds of the soybean).  It is naturally present in the human body and is used in cosmetics as a lubricant that leaves a softer, smoother appearance on the surface of skin.  It's small molecular structure enables it to penetrate the skin's surface easily and it helps in slowing the loss of water by forming a barrier that prevents evaporation.

Acid Propylene Glycol
It is produced through the fermentation of yeast and carbohydrates. It improves the moisture retention property of skin care products like Cyclax Oil of Evening Primrose Night Cream. Warning:  Continuous exposure to products with this chemical may cause headaches, throat irritation and allergic reactions. Experts advise you to rinse your skin after application or use and remember to remove your makeup completely immediately after arriving home and/or before going to bed. If the chemical is swallowed, it may also cause vomiting, difficulty of breathing, sleepiness, slurred speech, convulsions, liver and kidney abnormalities. if ingested in large amounts, can cause death.

Shocking!

 Isopropyl Myristate
Isopropyl Myristate is a synthetic oil used as an emollient, thickening agent, lubricant or moisturizer in beauty products Experts advise that thick creams like Cyclax Oil of Evening Primrose Night cream should be used in the winter time as they help in preventing moisture loss.Warning it may penetrate skin too deeply and end up clogging your pores and may cause acne inflammation.

Dimethicone
Dimethicone, also known as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), acts as an emollient which helps to soothe and soften the skin, essentially it prevents the skin from becoming dry. It also acts as a skin protectant Warning Users of dimethicone creams may be surprised to find that the product can actually worsen dryness in some individuals.

Triethanolamine

Triethanolamine is s a strong alkaline substance used as surfactant and pH adjusting chemical. It adjusts and buffers the pH, and solubilises oils and other ingredients that are not completely soluble in water.Warning this chemical is known to be very harmful to both your lungs and your eyes by causing painful inflammation. it is safe to use as long as the exposure is very short as in a product that gets washed off.

Parfum
Parfum is a mixture of fragrant essential oils or aroma compounds, fixatives, and solvents used to give the human body, animals, objects, and living spaces "a pleasant scent.

Oenothera Biennis Evening Primrose
This is a common evening primrose: a coarse biennial of eastern North America with yellow flowers that open in the evening; naturalized in Europe.

Carbomer
Carboner is an excellent thickening agent and is consistent from batch to batch and doesn't support bacterial growth, and is hypo-allergenic. It also has a particularly nice "skinfeel," producing solutions and gels that feel rich and luxurious to the touch. As an emulsion stabilizer, carbomers keep oils or creams suspended in water and prevent separation.

Benzyl Alcohol
Benzyl alcohol is produced naturally in many plants, fruits (such as strawberries) and some essential oils (such as ylang ylang, hyacinth and jasmine). As it derives from aromatic material, it has an inherently pleasant scent.Benzyl alcohol functions by killing or preventing the growth of a broad spectrum of bacteria, yeasts and moulds, and is ideal for emulsions

Methylchloroisothiazolinone
Methylchloroisothiazolinone is considered to be a preservative that has amazing antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Methylisothiazolinone
Methylisothiazolinone, or MIT as it is sometimes known, is a preservative used in cosmetics and beauty products. It is a powerful biocide, or "chemical substance capable of killing living organisms, usually in a selective way." Ultimately, Methylisothiazolinone is used to prevent a wide variety of bacteria and fungi from growing in cosmetics and beauty products Warning It has only been approved for use in rinse-off formulas and at low concentrations. This is concerning because Cyclax Oil of Evening Primrose Night cream is not rinsed off

Conclusion
Personally I have had no problem with Cyclax Oil of Evening Primrose Night Cream whatsoever. I am a little bit alarmed that it has ingredients in it like Methylisothiazolinone and Triethanolamine which are supposed to be rinsed off after use. But what has caused me the most concern is Acid Propylene Glycol. But I am happy and relieved to find out it does have some natural ingredients such a palm kemel   soybean oil, traces of strawberries, ylang ylang, hyacinth and jasmine and of course Oenothera Biennis Evening Primrose. However although I have found it good for the most part and it does make my skin feel good, I personally think it is quite thick so the next time I buy a night cream i think I will go for something a lot thinner.
